The Union Pacific developed these massive 4-12-2 steam locomotives, giving the class it's name.  These locomotives, in the 9000-series, were designed to pull long freight trains at passenger train speeds, while reducing the overall weight per axle of the locomotive.  They were quite successful, and were used for more than thirty years.  These locomotives were unusual in that they had a  third cylinder tucked away underneath.  The example shown above is the first of the class; a later model is shown below.
