|6-8-6 Turbine Steam Locomotives|
This was the Pennsylvania Railroad's grand experiment, the S2 class -- a steam locomotive using a turbine as its power source. It was unique in its design -- and something of a unique failure. It remained one-of-a-kind. Though in real life it was a failure, it inspired generations of models in its image. The most famous of the Lionel models, #681 from the postwar period, is shown above. A later (2000 vintage) model, by MTH in their RailKing line, is shown below.
