Dunellen Railroad Days, 2002 |
In September of 2002, Dunellen once again held Railroad Days, a celebration of the railroad heritage of the town. As part of that celebration, there were excursions run from Dunellen to North Branch on the former Jersey Central main line (now the NJ Transit Raritan Valley line). These excursions were pulled by NYS&W #142, a 2-8-2 Mikado built in China. The steamer was on one end of the train, pulling westbound. On the eastbound end of the train were NYS&W's two E-9 units, with an added Geep to make sure they had enough pulling power. In the first photo, the train is returning to Dunellen from a previous excursion, with one of the E-9s on the lead.
Unfortunately, it was late afternoon and the sun was shining into the camera, but here's a better shot of the lead E-9.
With the sun to the rear, the photos are much better! Here's a close-up of the lead unit.
Here's the Geep, placed for some reason between the E-units. I believe that it's a GP-18.
Here's the trailing E-unit, followed by the Suzie-Q's dome car.
As the train pulls into the station, we finally get a glimpse of the steamer!
Here's the steamer, again with the sun in just the wrong place for good pictures!
A close-up of the Mikado!
After the excursion, the train slowly backed out of the station. With the sun to the rear, here's a shot of the 'face' of the Mikado.
Here's a close-up; the bell is hand-rung with a cord that runs to the cab.
