|E-44 Electric Locomotives|
The locomotive above is an E-44 rectifier electric locomotive of the Pennsylvania Railroad (it's preserved at the Railroad Museum of PA). Developed for the Pennsy by GE in 1959, it was based on an earlier rectifier designed for the Virginian Railway (and immortalized in a model by Lionel). The rectifiers worked by converting the overhead AC power, supplied by the catenary, to DC power for the traction motors. These locomotives were designed primarily for freight service.
